There will be an "Escape from Alcatraz" swim during this year's FINA Championships. Saturday, August 12. Reading what you wrote, you've now got me psyched to do it. Oh my god! Sharks! Nothing like facing your fears and realizing there is nothing to fear but....sharks.

You're right, there are great whites out by the Farrallon Islands, which are also 28 miles off the coast, and there has been the occasional attack of surfers near the coastal beaches every few years. But, I don't recall any great white sightings in the Bay and certainly no attacks. And with 900 people in the water I figure my chances are slim that a shark would decide to take a bite out of me (call that peace of mind brought to you by probability theory ... :)!
Yes, the swim was a race and I was very excited about placing 5th in my age group and 120th of all swimmers. Incidentally, the overall winner was a woman!

Ulla,

That's fabulous. I really envy you. Wish I could have done that, but don't really think 61 degrees is possible for me even at a sprint.

As for sharks, the Farallon islands are pretty near the Golden Gate bridge. They are home to one of the few relatively untampered white shark colonies. Every year around 5-6 big females and about 10 smaller males are known to regularly return to the area. The islands are a few miles out, but indeed, surfing is pretty common, in that area, attacks are quite known....almost all from that coast are white-shark attacks.

Is it a race? How did you place?
